These 7 tips for designing a kitchen with storage space will help you organize your kitchen like never before!

At Cerwood, we’ve been helping homeowners get the kitchen of their dreams for over 40 years – so we know just how important proper storage space is.

We’ll share some tips we’ve learned over the years to ensure your kitchen is as functional as possible. Let’s get started now!

7 tips for designing a kitchen with storage space

1. install sliding shelves

One issue that many homeowners face is a lack of useable storage space. For example, they may have large cabinets, but the space hasn’t been optimized to store their items. Sliding shelves help you make the most of your storage space!

Sliding shelves make your items more accessible

Sliding shelves, also called rolling shelves, can give you more functional storage space. Items that are difficult to store, like flat pans or cans of food, can be easily organized with different configurations of sliding shelves.

Not only that, but sliding shelves also help to make all of your items much more accessible. You won’t have to worry about awkward reaching or bending when you can simply pull out your shelf closer to you!

2. use tilt down drawers

Tilt down drawers were fairly common with older kitchen styles – like the one shown below. Sometimes, homeowners aren’t even aware that the small, thin cabinet right below their sink even opens up! If you have an older kitchen, you should see if you have a hidden tilt down drawer!

Tilt down drawers are perfect for storing cleaning items

If you are looking to remodel your kitchen, adding a tilt down drawer is super easy, and can help you make the most of your cabinet space.

These small, narrow drawers are the perfect place to store your cleaning supplies, like sponges, cloths, scrubbers, and more. Remember, maximizing even the smallest spaces can greatly improve your kitchens functionality!

3. leverage vertical space

When most of us think about a kitchen with storage space, we often think about kitchens with dozens of cabinets with horizontal shelves. However, making use of vertical space can help you organize otherwise hard-to-store items.

Make use of vertical space to store pans or even garbage cans!

Utilizing vertical storage space can help you storage items that don’t really fit well on the standard horizontal shelves within your cabinetry. For example, how many times have you had to pull out a pan or cutting board…only to have the entire stack come out with it!

Vertical shelves can help you organize items like pans, baking sheets, cutting boards, and even some types of pots, so you don’t have to stack them all on top of each other.

You can also get creative – consider storing your compost or garbage bins on a sliding vertical shelf.

This is a great idea if you have pets who are prone to digging through your garbage when you aren’t home, or if you simply want them out of sight when not in use. Keeping these bins away also gives you more floor space – perfect for eat-in kitchens.

If you aren’t able to add custom vertical storage options like the ones shown above, you may want to consider organizing with your cabinet doors instead! That is another great way to make use of vertical space.

4. store items above your cabinets

Have you ever looked above your cabinets? Unless kitchen cabinets go all the way to the ceiling, there is often a fairly large gap between your cabinets and the ceiling! Why not make use of this space as well?

Don't forget about above-cabinet space!

Making use of the space above your cabinetry is an excellent way to get a kitchen with storage space without any sort of major renovation or change required! Since this area is always on display for everyone to see, you’ll probably want to be a bit selective with what items you choose to store up there.

You may want to mix it up with your favourite decor or display some of your favourite items like your teapot or espresso maker. No matter how you choose to organize it, using that space can help you de-clutter some of your cabinets.

5. keep the space light (in colour!)

The way you choose to decorate your kitchen can have an effect on how you perceive it as well. Did you know that lighter kitchens give the illusion of openness – rather than a feeling of being closed in?

A lighter kitchen feels more open and bright

Although choosing a lighter kitchen won’t actually give you more storage space, it will help make the space feel open, cheery and bright. This will make you more likely to want to spend time in your kitchen, and therefore, may just be what you need to actually enjoy organizing your kitchen!

6. add floating shelves

Open shelving is in when it comes to modern kitchen design. If you have space above your cabinets that isn’t taken up by cabinets, or you have a lot of empty wall space, you may want to consider adding in some floating shelves!

Floating shelves are attractive and increase your storage space!

Installing floating shelves is a great way to create additional space to organize small items like spices or spice racks, jars of food, pasta noodles, cookbooks, recipes, and so much more! What you choose to put on display is totally up to you!

Floating shelves can be used in addition to upper cabinets. Sometimes, they are placed between two cabinets where there is already a natural gap. Other times, they are used instead of upper cabinets in kitchens that do not have many or any upper cabinets at all!

7. customize your kitchen

Whether you are planning a full kitchen renovation or just want a few simple ways to get a kitchen with storage space, adding custom options is one of the best ways to create storage space – your way!

Custom cabinetry or accessories can easily help you get organized

Customizing your cabinetry can help you add in many of the suggestions we mentioned above – and so much more! Take a look at some of the examples above. The kitchen pictured has a variety of cabinet and drawer sizes, as well as a large kitchen island with a sink and power outlet.

The other two images show just how much you can customize your cabinetry! If you are a wine connoisseur, for example, you may want to have a custom-made storage solution for your favourite bottles. Or, if you absolutely love cooking and want to ensure your spices are organized and easily accessible, you can add a built-in spice drawer!

When it comes to getting a kitchen with storage space, you will be sure to have absolutely everything you need if you choose to add custom cabinetry, shelving, or accessories that are built with your unique needs and kitchen in mind.
